That makes sense.

BTW, When I said "easy", I meant that a PHP programmer shouldn't have any trouble hacking WordPress to make it possible to, for example, exclude some posts from a special RSS feed used only for syndication. There may even be plugins already that would enable that sort of thing. If not, if you're doing a big syndication deal, hiring somebody to do the programming would be easily affordable.

I don't know what all the rules entailed (or if he knows about how to mark only certain posts for syndication), but I do know that one rule was that no guest posts could ever be published on his blog. Every blog post had to be written by him and only him. I assume this was to guarantee the quality of the posts that would then be syndicated on the "big name" site.

Ryan,

That's interesting about the restrictions on what he could publish. It'd be easy enough to mark a post as "not for syndication" to automatically exclude content they didn't want to syndicate. I wonder whether the concern was only about the content that got syndicated, or whether the owners of the other site just didn't want to be associated with a site that published certain types of things.

Syndication is mostly a good thing, especially when done ethically as you describe. It's the syndication by splogs (spam blogs) that's bad.

I know one guy who got a syndication deal with a widely read web site and it came with rules for what he could and could not publish on his blog. Of course, the syndicating site now drives a TON of traffic for him. Pretty cool gig, although I'm not sure I'd want to do it. :-)

You made some good points. I think that if the Syndicated article is in keeping with what and is of a equal or better quality than your post it's OK. They will get the desired Google boost and back links for improved SEO.

Here's something ironic for you: I got a trackback from a splog that published an excerpt from this post...surrounded and overwhelmed by 3 AdSense units (about twice as much AdSense as content). No comments or original content of course.
